Macaws are long-tailed, often colorful, and look very pretty.
Some of the macaws are Anodorhanchas, Cyanopsitta, Primolius, Arthropitta,
and Diopsitta.Macaws live mainly in North America (Mexico only),
South America, and the Eastern Caribbean.
Most species live in forests, especially in the rain forest, but some are found in
macaw forests or savannas. There are 19 species of macaw, including extinct
and critically endangered species. The Hyacinth macaw is beautiful.

Proportionately large beak, long tail, and relatively hollow, light in color.
Sometimes the facial patch is smaller in some species and is limited to a yellow
patch around the eye and a second patch near the base of the beak between
members of the Anodorhincus genus.

The Spix's macaw is now probably extinct in the wild.
Much of the macaw is now at risk of flooding and a few are endangered.
One of the biggest reasons for Macau's disappearance is rapid deforestation
and illegal fishing nets.

International trade in all macaw species is regulated by the International Trade
Convention on Endangered Species of Wild Plants and Wildlife.

Macau has been tamed by humans since ancient times and is still tamed today.
Macaw feathers were highly desirable for their bright colors so
macaws have been lost through hunting and trade since time immemorial.
Feathers were often used as ornaments and were found in both formal and
cemetery sites. South American weavers use their feathers to make several
textiles.

Macaws eat seeds, nuts, fruits, dates, leaves, flowers, and stems.
Some of the foods that macaws eat in certain areas of the wild contain toxic
or caustic substances that they can digest.
Usually, parrots and macaws in the Amazon Basin eat soil from open riverbanks
to escape this toxin.
